At long last the day has finally come– we’re off on our trip to Addis Ababa (and eventually Jimma) Ethiopia! The flight and layover in London went smoothly, as did our check in at the Ras hotel. AIHA graciously provided us with an escort from the airport so we wouldn’t get lost in a new city. We met with the director of the program at Tegbare id, Dr. Getachew Alemu, that night and went over our schedule for this upcoming week too. It looks like we’ll be busy while we’re here in Addis, but we have this first weekend to get our bearings and get recovered from the jet lag.
While we haven’t done much BTB program activity yet, we were able to build our Billimeter from the parts we got before we left the US. We fashioned an enclosure out of the box that the ammeter came in and were able to make all the connections with the tools available in our electronic parts kit. Working on a hotel bedroom floor instead of in the OEDK was certainly different, but goes to show how these technologies can be developed and deployed in many settings regardless of the technical resources available.
